So it’s been a few weeks since updating, but here is a recap of the past month and Module 4.
Let’s just start by saying THANK GOODNESS unit three is over. That last project, the PBL outline almost did me in. My work paid off, as I received great marks, so I am happy about that. However, as someone who is already anti-tech (yes, I have a webpage and write these posts but believe me, I really do not care for digital tech in the least bit) having to spend so much time on digital elements for learning and the classroom was trying. The worst aspect was the time and attention paid to anything published by the world economic forum, skills of the 21st century and economic outlook for future students is SO DEPRESSINGLY AWFUL. But that’s a whole other blog topic.
Imagine the sweet spring breeze of fresh air that was an email two days before the start of Module 4’s first class from the new instructor. It was an informal, personalized introduction letter with a bit about her, her style, how to reach her, and a getting to know you quiz. Night and day from the least instructor, it made me so excited for class. And sure enough, it has been a dream these past few weeks. (I kind of think this juxtaposition was by design, as this module is all about classroom management and the first unit was all about the classroom environment and teacher attitude…) The assignments are also less rigorous, so its been less stressful to study and complete assignments, but it’s still taking me about 2-3 hours every night to get everything done.
So what have we covered? As I stated, classroom management including creating norms, rules, and routines, implementing transitions, learning about student behaviors and strategies to handle them, and most recently becoming aware of traumatic stresses and how to support students with these issues. Its been rough reading about some of the harsh realities of young people, and I’ve gone to bed a few times a little bit defeated by the world knowing such struggle and evil exists. The bright spot has been all the stories of how teachers have been able to offer help, even just little things like a snack or toothbrush, special space or morning hug, for those who survive rather than live outside the classroom.
I’ve also watched a lot of teaching video’s and it really is helpful viewing others manage their classes, troubleshoot tech issues, and creatively present their lessons. The online classes are most interesting to me as it is my first exposure to grade school online, and I wasn’t quite clear how that would play out. Watching examples of excellent classes and teachers (as well as not-so-great) has helped give me an idea of how online learning can be successful for all age groups. I imagine in my future online teaching is in the cards, so I really do feel I am gaining a lot of exposure to the practice and learning some great skills and tolls for successfully running a classroom.
I wish I had more creative projects to post in my portfolio, but most of the work has been an example of a classroom management plan that isn’t that pretty or exciting. I posted a group collab Padlet of Traumatic stresses, but hopefully, there will be some juicier items to share in the future. I also am going to be reaching out to a possible teaching school this month, so here’s to hoping for the best outcome with that!
